I want to learn how to play a bass guitar and an upright bass and I am getting a lot of advice from people saying I should learn how to play acoustic guitar first and others saying I should continue with my piano lessons and get better at playing piano before starting to learn bass. What is the best course of action please?

Well, learning and mastering the piano is going to benefit you when learning to play another instrument. Since music notation is pretty much the same for all instruments your piano skills will help you greatly when starting your new instrument.

As far as learning to play acoustic guitar first, I don’t see the point. If you want to learn bass, choose bass, there’s no point in learning to play an instrument your not interested in.
