When I started learning to play the accordion about 12 months ago I was playing my first song within a couple of days. I am a complete beginner with no musical knowledge and I am teaching myself to play the accordion. I am using The Complete Piano Accordion Tutor and I am enjoying the process. So my question is, how long will it take to completely master the piano accordion?
That’s like asking how long is a piece of string. This is an extremely complicated question and the answer is also complicated so I will keep it short. If I use myself as an example, I am a piano and organ player and I have played for over forty years, do I think I am a master, no, I was a professional musician, I can sit down and play anything I want by ear, but a master, defiantly not. My definition of a master is a concert pianist such as Beethoven or Mozart or maybe a jazz pianist like Oscar Peterson.
The point is to be a master you have to have dedication and nothing else on your mind for hours on end, day in and day out to become a master accordion player, if that’s what you want fine. Using the 10,000 hour rule to learn something properly you can probably figure out how long it will take.
I think the best answer for most people who wants to learn to play any instrument is enjoy the process, which you said above, this is the secret to success, because as long as you enjoy the process you keep learning and as long as you keep learning you keep getting better and so ultimately you will become as good as you want to be and if that’s to be a master accordionist then that’s fine too.
Enjoy your music
